On this page I will be documenting the process for the Individual 3D print Project. There were a few options of what we can 3D print. A coin sorter, toothbrush holder, a earbuds holder, and a phone holder. I will be 3D printing a toothbrush holder, that can hold 4 toothbrushes. It will be 3D printed using filament on the Makerbot 3D printer.
Pre-work From Designer Notebook
The image below is showing my original ideas about the toothbrush holder assignment. I had some Ideas of what I could 3D print, and measurements of toothbrushes so I know how big the holes on my design needs to be. Now I have ideas for a design, but eventually I needed to make it more creative.
Completion of 3D Print Project
Completing my 3D print assignment took a lot of thought, and changes to my design. It helped me think on a more creative level. And I eventually finished my assignment with "Toaster" level creativity.
I used Inventor to create a design for my toothbrush holder. Originally I just make a rectangle with some square holes in it, and rounded off some edges and called it good. But with advice from Ms. Proctor, and friends we decided it needed to be spiced up. When the design was just a square it looked like a toaster, so I added more detail to make it look like a Toaster Toothbrush Holder! This is the image of my Toaster Toothbrush Holder in Inventor.

After Creating the toaster in Inventor, I had to put the design in Makerbot, so it could 3D print. Then I took a look at the Preview screen to see how the design will be printed, and how long it would take. I made my design almost the maximum size so it would take a long time to print. The left image is the file in Makerbot ready to print and the one on the right is the preview screen.

This is the final image of my toaster toothbrush holder. It holds the 4 toothbrushes that it is required to hold. Overall I wish I would have made the design smaller. I had no reason why it needed to be so big, and I never thought about how small or big was the right size. But we live and learn, and if I did this project again I would have a much better understanding of how this should be designed.

What I learned
During this 3D print project the main thing I learned was to let my creativity flow! In a class like this final products don't need to looked like they are made by a professional, but instead make creative individual designs. Another thing I learned was replacing the filament in the 3D printer. I saw the demo on this in class but I wasn't fully sure how to do this. I got some help from a friend and now I know how to replace filament. Overall this was a fun assignment, and I enjoy the process of making a Toaster Toothbrush holder.
